The story of Golyan Group goes back to Pawan Golyan’s father, Sohan Lal Golyan.
In the early 1960s, Sohan Lal Golyan came to Nepal after being invited to help start industries in the country. At that time, Nepal had very few industries.

He started businesses in areas such as umbrellas, cassettes and textiles. These businesses also created employment for local people, especially in Biratnagar.
This became the foundation of what later grew into Golyan Group.

Instead of keeping the business limited to the old areas, he started looking at new opportunities.
One of the important businesses under his leadership was Reliance Spinning Mills.
The company became one of the major businesses connected with the Golyan Group. Textile manufacturing remained an important part of the group’s business for many years.
Pawan also believed that a business should not enter a new sector without understanding it first.
In an earlier interview, he explained that the group would first try to understand a business before moving ahead with it.
This approach helped the group slowly expand into different areas.
Moving Beyond Textiles
Over the years, Golyan Group expanded its interests beyond textile manufacturing.
The group became involved in areas such as manufacturing, real estate, hospitality, banking, insurance, agriculture and renewable energy.
Today, Golyan Group describes itself as a diversified business group with more than six decades of history, over 10,000 employees and businesses across agriculture, manufacturing, real estate and hospitality, and renewable energy.

A New Interest: Agriculture
One of the most interesting parts of Pawan Golyan’s later journey is his interest in agriculture.
After spending many years in business, he became increasingly interested in the problems faced by farmers in Nepal.
He has said that agriculture was one of his interests and that a large part of Nepal’s population depends on it.
In 2017, he started working on organic farming as part of the group’s CSR activities. The initial work focused on teaching organic farming practices in a village in Jhapa.
The idea was simple — help farmers improve their work and create better opportunities in agriculture.
The group later expanded its agricultural activities, including projects related to farming and forestry.
From Businessman to Agriculture Advocate
Pawan Golyan’s interest in agriculture became more than just another business project.

Recognition for Creating Jobs
Pawan Golyan’s work in business also received recognition in Nepal.
In 2019, he received the CEO of the Year – Public Choice Award.
He was also recognized with a Business Leadership Excellence Award for 2018/2019.
In 2020, the Government of Nepal recognized him as a Commercially Important Person (CIP) for his contribution to employment generation.
These recognitions came after years of work across different businesses.
Passing the Business to the Next Generation
Business families eventually have to think about succession.
Pawan Golyan recently took that step.
After more than six decades of family business history in Nepal, he retired from his role as Chairman of Golyan Group and passed the leadership to his son, Akshay Golyan.
Pawan Golyan said that he would now focus more on Janata Agro & Forestry Ltd. and his long-term interest in agriculture and forestry.
This is an important change in his journey.
Instead of completely stepping away from work, he chose to spend more time on the area that had become personally important to him.
